Island Hopping
After the Battle of Midway, the Americans started an island hopping campaign to recapture islands conquered by the Japanese. The plan was to have a 2 pronged assault: General MacArthur took New Guinea, and Admiral Nimitz island hopped to the north, taking islands like the Marshalls and Gilberts. Nimitz’s forces would strike at the Marianas in June, 1944.
